On April 15, international tobacco giant Philip Morris International Incorporated (hereinafter referred to as PMI) unveiled a smokeless new tobacco product manufacturing plant in the Philippines at a cost of Php 8.8 billion (approximately RMB 1.113 billion), which is by far the largest investment in the smokeless new tobacco category in the Philippines.

Located on the 12,360-square-meter campus of PMFTC, a local subsidiary of FIMO International, in Tanauan, Batangas City, the plant is expected to be operational within the year, and will be able to produce 3.5 billion heated tobacco cigarettes per year. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Philippine Secretary of Agriculture, Jacek Olczak, CEO of FIMO International, and Denis Gorkun, President of PMFTC.

The new Philippine factory will produce specially designed Blends brand heated tobacco cartridges for BONDS by IQOS, a heated tobacco device to be launched in November 2022 by PMFTC, a subsidiary of Filmore International.

When BONDS heats tobacco, it releases emissions of harmful chemicals that are, on average, 95% lower than cigarettes," said the CEO of Filmore International. While these new nicotine-containing smokeless tobacco products are not without risk, the science shows that they are a better choice than cigarettes."

He noted that heated tobacco, oral nicotine pouches and other smokeless products now account for 36.4 percent of the company's adjusted net income, and that Fillmore smokeless new tobacco products are now sold in 84 markets with 33 million users, including 28.6 million IQOS users.

The CEO of Femo International also stated that they are very happy with the business environment in the Philippines, hence their decision to base their production in the country. Aside from being bullish on the Philippines, in 2023 Femo International also opened a heated tobacco cigarette production plant in Indonesia and entered the Malaysian market to launch its heated tobacco product, IQOS ILUMA.
