Malaysian e-cigarette users increased by 600% in 12 years

According to the Malaysian Adult Tobacco Survey 2023, the number of e-cigarette users in Malaysia has increased by 600% over the past 12 years. The study noted a surge in e-cigarette use in Malaysia, with about 5.8% of users in 2023 compared to 0.8% in 2011, an increase of more than 600%.
The study also found that overall, 68.1% of adults in Malaysia have ever heard of e-cigarettes, 8.9% (10.5% of males and 0.8% of females) have used e-cigarettes, while 5.8% of adults are currently using e-cigarettes.
The survey also found that smoking cessation and healthcare behaviors remain stagnant among adults who currently smoke and those who have tried to quit in the past 12 months. A total of 4.8 million adults in Malaysia smoke, while 3.7 million (14.6%) adults smoke every day.
The above data was made public in the findings of the National Health and Morbidity Survey 2023 and the Malaysian Adult Tobacco Survey 2023 released today (May 16th). The surveys involved respondents aged 15 years and above nationwide, with a total of 5,780 randomly selected Malaysian households from both urban and rural areas.
